This Elasticsearch summer in Berlin
In case you haven’t been following the news at @elasticberlin lately or you are not part of the meetup group here’s a summary of the events we’ve organised in the past weeks and the ones coming to you soon.
Elasticsearch Hackfest
On the 28th May instead of our regular user group we organised and coached an Elasticsearch Hackfest in the context of Berlin Buzzwords, during which we were lucky to count with the presence of some of the Elasticsearch team members.
Around 60 people got together to learn more about Elasticsearch and make interesting projects - we even had a waiting list and some visitors who dropped by Immobilien Scout, where the hackathon took place, to see if they could join last minute!
The teams worked on small, fun to build apps to send user notifications using the Percolator, getting movie recommendations based on other movies you like using Elasticsearch or helping language learners to determine a word gender with Logstash.
The Elasticsearch Hackfest was great for developers new to Elasticsearch, as they got to resolve a questions as well as for more seasoned Elasticsearch users as they got to play around with new things and to mix up with the Berlin community, some outside visitors and the Elasticsearch crowd.
We'd like to send a big thank you to our sponsors SysEleven, Immobilienscout24 and Berlin Online for making this get together possible.
Elasticsearch UG
We run the Elasticsearch user group every last Tuesday of the month. While the one in May was replaced by the Hackfest we had a regular meeting at the end of June and we’ll have a regular meeting at the end of July.
In June Florian Gilcher continued the tradition of hosting a beginners workshop while we host a more advanced talk in the main room. This time Jilles Van Gurp told us about how they take advantage of the ELK stack (Elasticsearch + Logstash + Kibana) at his company, Linko.
In July, Hannes Korte will speak about the configuration setting of Elasticsearch - the topic sounds very interesting and we’re sure it will be interesting for both masters and newcomers. If you are in Berlin, drop by the co.up coworking space next Tuesday 29th July from 19h!
Elasticsearch ELK Hackathon
On the 14th July, Florian Gilcher lead our second summer Hackathon. This time we sat together at the ThoughtWorks Werkstatt - new folks in the city who are active in supporting the tech community on the city by donating a great space in P-Berg. We had some nice people hacking on interesting small stuff and will probably publish some results soon.
Let's talk Python and Elasticsearch!
Buzzwords and Elasticsearch; Tech Open Air and Elasticsearch… big events are the perfect excuse to hack! On the 24th of July we had another great excuse to get together - the Europython Conference.
We dived deeper on Elasticsearch-dsl, Elasticsearchs library for Python, and host a talk by Honza Kral, who was visiting us from Prague. Europython was huge (with around 1200 Python developers to attend!) and filled the whole Berlin Congress Center.
And Ruby?
Elasticsearch and Asquera will also be present at eurucamp with Florian being part of the organization team and ES assisting through sponsoring. See you there!
